Participants build self-confidence, develop life skills, create new friendships, and are able to recognize and explore their true potential. OotM proves that students can have fun while they learn. Odyssey of the Mind begins at the local level. Schools join and form teams that are coached by an adult. It can be frightening. Roberts is a East Central region school district , they move on to compete at the state level. State champions represent their state at the World Finals competition, which is truly a global event with teams from many different states and countries such as Canada, Mexico, Germany, Poland, and China.

In Dr. Micklus created problems for middle and high schools in New Jersey. This competition was the first ever of its kind and Olympics of the Mind OM was born. As a result of popular demand, Creative Competitions, Inc. CCI was formed to produce and administer the program.
