More opportunity to talk to current students — High school students and their parents might have a better chance of talking to students who live on campus. Often, weekends are times where campus life is probably more laid-back, and people are not so rushed where they could take time to answer questions about the school, campus life, available services without feeling hurried through the tour.
Meeting instructors with weekend office hours — Unlike weekday tours, high school students and their parents might have a better chance to catch instructors who use their weekends to have office hours. They may also have more time to spend with prospects to answer questions about classes. More Time to See All the Campus buildings — In my tours of college campuses, getting the chance to tour the buildings on campus is usually saved for last.
Weekends work out better because there is often time to tour the buildings on campus. Experience Campus Social Life on the Weekends- For students who will be living on campus, visiting the college campus on the weekend could give the high school student a chance to hang out with other prospective students. They are able to see what the college would be like on weekends to find places for fun and recreation after classes.
There might be an interest in the arts, restaurants, student lounges. Disadvantages of Visiting Colleges on Weekends There are many advantages to visiting colleges on the weekends, however; there are some disadvantages. College tours — Though numerous colleges and universities have weekend tours for high school students with tight schedules, not all institutions conduct tours on weekends for visitors.
If the student still wants to visit, they would have to do it without an official college tour and no guides available to answer questions. Department closures — Many departments at colleges and universities only conduct business Monday through Friday, and they are usually the most critical departments such as admissions, advisors, and financial aid.
In cases like those, the student would be better off going on a visit during regular business hours. There are not many people on campus to interact with or ask questions. There is also a good chance that some buildings might be closed. Classes — High school students will not be able to sit in on classes that are in their major field of study because most classes are in session Monday through Thursday. The only classes held on Fridays are a few labs and minor courses and there are no classes in session on Saturdays and Sundays.
Should you visit college campuses in the summer? No matter the season in which you visit, a campus tour allows you to explore the buildings and grounds of a given school, as well as its surrounding community. Perhaps an urban college appeals to you in theory, but you realize on your campus tour that you miss the open green spaces and quiet of a rural setting. Conversely, your claustrophobia may worsen when you see that your prospective home for the next four years consists of the campus, one or two restaurants, and endless miles of farm and forest.
Even if you are comparing colleges in similar settings, you may find that the neighborhoods near each campus significantly impact the atmosphere of a school. Both are large state schools located in mid-sized cities.
Both have beautiful campuses. But the University of Washington is surrounded by independent coffee shops, ethnic restaurants, and used book stores. Ohio State University, in contrast, is bordered primarily by chain restaurants. This was an obvious difference to me, but other students may not have noticed.
A campus tour will also include visits to campus buildings. Are these buildings well maintained? Do you like the feeling of ancient wisdom that seeps from the stones of 19th century construction, or are you more at home with modern buildings?
This is a small but crucial consideration, as the buildings you live among can have an impact on how you experience your community. The answer to this question will vary from college to college. Some schools may seem abandoned during the summer months, while others may be quite busy. You might get a head start on SAT prep or begin to outline ideas for your college essay.
Maybe you are fine tuning your college list or building community service hours. Although some students automatically discount summer campus visits, these are a unique experience with both pros and cons. Before you write off summer campus visits, before you read our take on these unique opportunities. This makes summer the perfect time to visit schools that are further away.
Without the bounds of the school week, you will be able to travel to campuses that are far away and will be able to combine campus visits for multiple schools in the same areas.
Summer is also a great time for campus visits because there are often summer programs available on college campuses. This means that you can spend a prolonged period on campus, rather than just a quick trip. You may even have the opportunity to live in dorms, eat in the dining hall, and use campus resources like the library or student center. Summer programs provide a deeper experience than the typical campus visit.
If you schedule meetings in advance, you may find that professors have more time to spend with you during a summer campus visit.
